Fruit & Vegetables

👍As we pass the autumn equinox our days get shorter and are days are full of wind and change. It’s when we require heartier and warmer meals.

👍Bursting out the soil before the frost comes – Artichoke, Beetroot and Broccoli bloom. Before the ground gets too hard to dig – Butternut Squash, Carrots, Celeriac are good editions to dig up. Celery, Chillies, Courgettes, Cucumber are a great catch in October.

👍Then not to be forgotten our French flavouring friends before 31st October Fennel, French Beans, Garlic add a little Je nei sai qoi. The mighty Horseradish is back for Sunday roasts. Flu fighting Kale, Kohlrabi, Leek make a timely return for the immune system. Lettuce & salad leaves are still good.

👍Marrow, Onions, Pak Choi, Peppers, Potatoes (maincrop), Pumpkin, Radishes, Rocket, Runner Beans, Shallots, Spring Onion, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes are also still just in season.

👍One we are all looking forward to – for a bit of luxury, Truffles (black) , Truffles (white) are ready to pimp a pasta dish near you. Turnips, Watercress, Wild Mushrooms are all at their best.

👍Our trees and bushes are still plentiful – Apples, Bilberries, Blackberries, Damsons, Elderberries, Figs, Grapes, Medlar, Nectarines, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Quince, Raspberries, Redcurrants still bursting with sugar and sweetness for the birds to fatten up before they fly south for summer climes.

👍Nuts and herbs are still good but we start to move into our heavier herb flavours like Rosemary, Chives, Thyme and Sage. Also at their best Chestnuts, Chives, Cob nuts, Coriander, Oregano, Mint, Parsley (curly), Parsley (flat-leafed), Sorrel, Walnuts.

Meat & Seafood

👍 Meat: Autumn is made for Sunday walks and after a good Sunday walk you need a good Sunday Lunch. Beef, Duck, Grouse, Genuine Fowl, Hare, Lamb, Mallard, Partridge, Pheasant, Rabbit, Turkey, Venison, Wood Pigeon, whatever you like for your roast – it’s great to experiment with some of our game.

👍 Fish: October is when our nights start to get longer and what better on a Friday than a bag of fish and chips – Cod and Haddock are usually at their best, but unfortunately Cod has just lost it sustainability status, which in turn will probably mean Haddock too. So be kind to our ocean and ask your local chippy for something different.

👍 We still have lots of Crustaceans and Squid and Oyster are fabulous right now. Also Clams, Crab, Prawns, Shrimp, Squid, Whelks, Winkles.

👍 Halibut, Coley, Dover Sole or Lemon Sole, Hake, Dab, Plaice or Pollock – all in season and make a great alternative to Cod and Haddock. Other great additions are the meatier fish – Monkfish, Turbot, Grey and Red Mullet, Bream, Sea Bass, Gurnard are fantastic this time of year. We still have some oily fish too in season like Herring, Pilchards and Mackerel.
